Modern phacoemulsification cataract surgery is usually quick. Most adult cases are performed with numbing drops (topical anaesthesia) or a small amount of anaesthetic gel, without an injection around the eye. You stay awake but relaxed; you may see light and movement but not fine details of the procedure.
When might an injection be used?
Some situations — such as certain complex cases, very anxious patients, or specific medical needs — may be managed with local block techniques after assessment. General anaesthesia is reserved for selected children or special circumstances. Your anaesthetist and ophthalmologist decide in a NABH-standard OT environment like ours.
