During stitchless cataract surgery (phaco), your natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). Standard monofocal IOLs give excellent quality at one distance (usually far), with reading glasses often needed for near work. Premium IOLs — toric, multifocal, or extended depth of focus (EDOF) — aim to reduce dependence on glasses for more activities, but they are not suitable for every eye.
Types in broad terms
- Toric IOLs correct pre-existing corneal astigmatism to sharpen distance vision.
- Multifocal / trifocal IOLs split light for distance and near; some patients notice halos around lights at night.
- EDOF lenses aim for a smoother range of focus with often fewer side effects than older multifocal designs — individual response varies.
Choice depends on your retinal health, corneal shape, lifestyle, and realistic expectations. At Janta Hospital we combine biometry, advanced diagnostics, and discussion so you can align with what our Eye Department offers alongside other hospital services.
